Health and Safety in the workplace: Occupational medicine

Consultancy services for companies regarding health surveillance

The experience we have acquired as consultants, taking on formal roles such as Appointed Delegates, Head, or Member, of the Prevention and Protection Service in companies with a multitude of health and safety risks, has led us to the firm conviction that ongoing, robust synergy with occupational physicians can give rise to ambitious and far-sighted compliance projects.
With a view to facilitating constructive collaboration between the roles covered by PLS and those regarding Occupational Medicine (Consultant Occupational Physicians, Coordinating Doctors, Health Managers), PLS has built up a select few partnerships with companies offering health surveillance services in order to pursue a common mission for the benefit of the client. Managing complex assignments has taught us that when there is close coordination between the Head of the company Prevention and Protection Service (RSPP), the occupational physician and the personnel department it is possible to harmonise health protection and productivity, while also successfully managing any vulnerabilities there may be in the company’s resources.
At PLS, we have found that it is most beneficial to liaise with the coordinator of the occupational physicians in the event that health surveillance is entrusted to PLS through its well-established partners. This role is covered by a specialist, a versatile professional with many years of wide-ranging experience, capable of uniting the team of occupational physicians appointed within the context of a company. The coordinator is in charge and of intervening in complex cases, dealing with them not only from a clinical point of view but also in terms of balancing the worker’s health with the role covered in the company.
Together with its partners in the Occupational Medicine sector, PLS can provide its clients with a company medical facility. General practitioners are increasingly less easily available, this, combined with the difficulty in reconciling work with personal commitments, encourages the arrangement of this kind of welfare service for workers: a health adviser available free of charge on company premises during working hours. Similarly, prevention campaigns, such as vaccinations, are also very much appreciated as is support for trips abroad or campaigns dedicated to specific health issues, which can include the participation of further health consultants who specialise in issues of interest to the client.

The Occupational physician

A qualified doctor specialised in occupational medicine, responsible for developing the company’s health plan and for monitoring all workers in relation to their exposure to the risks associated with their specific duties.
Several occupational physicians may be appointed in complex company structures, with the support of a coordinator. The main duties are:
• Drawing up the health plan
• Carrying out the general and specific medical examinations on workers
• Guaranteeing an inspection of the workplace at least once a year
• Attending periodic meetings
• A member of the Prevention and Protection Service
